6×6 One Sheet Wonder: Two Card Sets

Welcome back to the craft room! Today’s 6×6 One Sheet Wonder: Two Card Sets is one I’m really excited about. This is my third version of the 6×6 One Sheet Wonder, and this template turns one sheet of patterned paper into three cards—with just a small strip left over.

While playing around with this design, I discovered that a few extra cuts to the main layout create three completely different cards. So today, I’m sharing both versions so you can choose the style that fits your crafting mood.

Paper & Supplies

For today’s project, I’m using the Lost and Found Two paper pad from My Mind’s Eye. Like many of my 6×6 pads, I’ve had this one for years. The paper is double-sided and has a nice, heavier weight, which makes it perfect for cardmaking.

For all of my card bases and sentiment strips, I’m using my favorite ivory cardstock from the 110lb Recollections Coffee and Cream paper pack. Each card base is cut to 8 1/2″ x 5 1/2″ and scored at 4 1/4″ to create A2 cards.

For the first set of cards, I used a beautiful maroon linen-textured cardstock from my local print shop for the mats. For the second set, I switched things up and used the brown cardstock from the same Coffee and Cream pack.

I’m also using the same two stamp sets for both designs: Stampabilities Card Phrases and an exclusive Organic set from Rubbernecker Stamps (now Brass & Bliss). All sentiments were stamped with Vintage Photo Distress Archival Ink.

6×6 One Sheet Wonder Cutting Guide

The first version of this 6×6 One Sheet Wonder: Two Card Sets works especially well with directional patterned paper.

Start by cutting a 1/2″ x 6″ strip from one side of your paper. This leaves you with a 5 1/2″ x 6″ piece.

Next, cut a 2″ strip from the 6″ side. You’ll now have a 5 1/2″ x 2″ piece.

From the remaining 4″ section, cut a 3″ x 4″ rectangle. This leaves a final piece measuring 2 1/2″ x 4″.

Original Design: Card 1

Start with the 3″ x 4″ patterned paper piece and mat it with a 3 1/4″ x 4 1/4″ panel. Since this paper is nice and thick, I used Bearly Art Precision Craft Glue throughout. I centered this panel on the card base.

For the sentiment, I used the “Deepest Sympathy” stamp from the Card Phrases set. The sentiment strip is cut to 3 7/8″ x 7/8″ and matted with a slightly larger linen-textured piece to create a thin border.

Because the sentiment overlaps layers, I added foam squares to the outer edges for support.

Original Design: Card 2

This card uses the 2 1/2″ x 4″ piece, matted to 2 3/4″ x 4 1/4″. I placed it slightly left of center for added interest.

The sentiment, “You Are Simply the Best,” is stamped on a 3 1/4″ x 5/8″ strip and matted to a piece of card cut to 3 1/2″ x 1″. I offset this to the right and adhered it flat to the card base.

Original Design: Card 3

The final card uses the 5 1/2″ x 2″ strip, matted to a piece of card cut to 5 1/2″ x 2 1/4″.

Since both pieces are the same width, I used my MISTI to help line everything up cleanly. It’s a great trick when you want a perfectly even edge.

For the sentiment, I stamped directly onto the card base using the “Happy Birthday” stamp. While the base was in the MISTI, I also aligned the patterned panel.

Use the Leftover Strip

One of the things I love about this 6×6 One Sheet Wonder: Two Card Sets is that nothing goes to waste.

That leftover 1/2″ x 6″ strip can be trimmed into three 2″ pieces to decorate the inside of your cards.

For the first two cards, I created simple fishtail banners using my scissors. For the third, I cut a clean angled edge for a different look. Each piece was adhered near the fold for a finished interior.

Alternate Cutting Layout

For the second set of cards, I added a few extra cuts to the original layout. These are marked with red lines on the cutting guide.

This version works best with non-directional patterned paper since the pieces are rotated and rearranged.

Alternate Design: Card 1

For card number 1, start with the 3″ x 4″ piece of patterned paper and a separate mat cut to 3 1/4″ x 4 1/4″ from the 110lb brown cardstock in the Coffee and Cream paper pack.

Important: Cut the patterned paper and the mat separately on the diagonal. This ensures you’ll have a visible mat border on all three sides of each triangle.

Once both pieces are cut, adhere each patterned triangle to its matching mat, then glue them onto the card base as shown above.

My first instinct for the sentiment was to stamp directly onto the card base between the triangles. Instead, I decided to try something a little different.

Using the Tim Holtz Alphanumeric Bold die set, I cut “Happy Birthday” from the same brown cardstock as the mats. The letters are approximately 5/8″ tall. Using reverse tweezers, I adhered “Happy” along the top triangle edge and “Birthday” along the bottom for a clean, graphic look.

Alternate Design: Card 2

This is a fun twist on the original design. Start with the 2 1/2″ x 4″ piece of patterned paper and trim it into two pieces measuring 2 1/2″ x 2″.

For the mats, begin with a 2 3/4″ x 4 1/4″ piece of cardstock and cut it in half to create two mats measuring 2 3/4″ x 2 1/8″.

Adhere each patterned piece to its mat, then line them up evenly on the card front. I used my MISTI again here to help keep everything straight and aligned.

For the sentiment, I returned to the “Deepest Sympathy” stamp from Stampabilities. The sentiment strip is cut to 3 7/8″ x 1″ from ivory cardstock, and the mat measures 4 1/4″ x 1 1/4″ from the same brown cardstock.

Since this is a horizontal design, the slightly larger sentiment panel helps balance the layout.

To add dimension, I used 3D Foam Squares. Because the panel is wider, I added a few extra along the edges to prevent sagging during mailing. Even without support in the center, the edges provide enough stability.

Alternate Design: Card 3

This is probably the most labor-intensive card of the set, but it’s worth it. Start with the 5 1/2″ x 2″ piece of patterned paper and cut it into three strips that measure 1/4″, 3/4″, and 1″.

There are two options for the mats on this design. The first option is to cut a single mat that is 5 1/2″ wide and as tall as you would like, depending on how much spacing you want between the strips.

The second option, which is what I used, is to cut three separate mats to create a thin border around each strip. These are trimmed to 3/8″, 7/8″, and 1 1/8″ to coordinate with the patterned paper pieces.

I know eighth-inch cuts aren’t everyone’s favorite, and I’m usually right there with you, but they really help create that delicate border on this design.

As I assembled the strips, I used my MISTI stamping tool to help line everything up along a straight edge. It makes a big difference when working with narrow pieces like this.

Finally I stamped the Happy Birthday sentiment from Stampabilities directly onto the card base for a finished look.
