Welcome back to the craft room and today’s Easy Cards Using Distress Oxide Backgrounds post. Do you remember the backgrounds from our last paper crafting project First Time Using Distress Oxide Sprays? Today I’m going to show you how to turn some of them into stunning cards in just minutes. There may even be a surprise Bonus card or two at the end of the post as well. Stick around and let me show you what I made!
Distress Background Card #1
I may say card #1, but we will be using three backgrounds that will yield three cards! The supply list for these cards is rather short. It begins with the red, blue/violet, and yellow backgrounds from our previous post. I also used the Momenta Quilt Square die set, the Rubbernecker Stamps Class Exclusive Organic stamp set, Gina K’s Amalgam ink, Best Ever Craft Tape, and the Studio Katia Embellishment Wand.
As you may recall, these three backgrounds were all made on Canson Graduate watercolor paper, making then super easy to die cut. I am going to cut each of these backgrounds, as well as 2 pieces of Recollections white 65 lb card, with the Quilt Square die set by Momenta. This will give me enough pieces to make 3 quilt squares. Alternating the placement of the three colors I am left with 3 very beautiful quilt squares that measure 3.125 (3 1/8”) square.
The die isn’t very intricate but unfortunately it is difficult to cut. I had to run the die through my Sizzix Big Shot forwards and back twice. Even with my scrapbook.com Magic Mat, it was difficult to get through the thin card with only one pass. After adhering the quilt squares to the top of the card base, I added a very simple sentiment to each card front with amalgam ink and my Mimi Misti. These cards would make a wonderful gift set for family or friends with several different sentiments.
Distress Background Card #2
Our next card is just as simple and just as pretty! I began with one of the green Distress Oxide backgrounds. This background was also made on a piece of Canson Graduate watercolor paper. Most of the supplies for this card have been in my crafty stash for a little while. They begin with my new favorite leafy branch die set from Brass & Bliss, the Foliage Trio Die Set. The supplies continue with an unused embossed background from my Elegant White on While Cards blog post. Finally, the sentiment that has been with me for well over a year. This simple Hello is from the Spellbinders Be Bold Sentiments Hot Foil and Die set with gold foil.
After the foliage branch was cut, I decided to enhance the edges with a little bit of Scorched Timber Distress Ink. This really brought out the different colors and textures of the Oxide Sprays around the edge of the leaves. Before adding the branch to my card front, I trimmed down the embossed panel to 4” x 5.25”. I also added an extra white branch of the same die cut. Again, this is a very simple yet beautiful card.
The photo below has a blue tinge to it that I am unable to completely remove. However, you are correct if you think you see different shades of white card. The embossed panel is definitely a different shade of white. I am unsure if it is a piece of Bristol Smooth Vellum paper or a different brand of card stock. Whichever the case, it does add an additional visual element to the card.
Distress Background Card #3
Our last card begins with an element I put together in Cricut Design Space. I believe that is where I found the flower, but I wanted to add a different spin on it. To do that, I created a box with 1/8” sides and places the flower inside. While this is a pretty element to cut with my Cricut Explore Air 2, there is a slight flaw in the design. Because of this, it is necessary to cut at least 2 of the designs and glue them together to make it stable. For today’s card I chose to glue 3 of them together to give me a nice thick die cut embellishment for my card front.
After going through the remainder of the Distress Oxide backgrounds I finally chose one of the bright blue and teal color panels. Because I wanted to trim the panel to fit perfectly behind my embellishment, I was able to choose what part of the background to keep. I adhered the die cut to the background with a little bit of Art Glitter Glue before adding it to the center of my card. This bright pop of color with the bright white surrounding it makes this a very striking card! I opted to not add a sentiment, although it could be included later. However, I think I will just leave this card front as is.
BONUS Easy Cards Using Distress Oxide Backgrounds
If you have stuck with me this far, let me show you the Bonus cards I created today!! Before I made my Distress Oxide Spray backgrounds, I spent about 30 minutes cutting watercolor paper into 4.5” x 6” panels. When cutting my quilt pieces, I trimmed the backgrounds down to approximately 3.25” x 4.5”. The die was lined up very carefully and I was left with a scrap piece that had a very Polaroid photo look to it. In the corresponding video, I mentioned how they might make beautiful cards, and I was right!
To create the focal point, I trimmed down some white Recollections card to fit behind the die cut scrap and glued them together. I then took ALL the inside pieces from the white outlines of the original cards and glued them into place. The sentiment, from the Ms. Sparkle & Co stamp set was stamped on a scrap piece of 3 x 1.25” card. And there you go, three beautiful Bonus Cards! As I mentioned above, the quilt square trio of cards would make a beautiful gift set. If you also include these matching cards, not only will you have Zero scraps, but your gift just increased to 6 matching cards!
