Flashback Friday 3D Flower

Posted on January 13, 2023January 5, 2023 by Leen

Good morning my friends and welcome to another addition of Flashback Friday. Today we are going back to December of 2000 and a cute little 3D flower.

This flower was inspired by a snowflake that I was tatting for the holidays. I was attempting a different join for the center of the snowflake, but wasn’t paying attention and made more repeats than I needed. Not to worry, I kept making the repeats and twirled it into a flower when I was finished. To make a smaller or larger bloom, adjust the size of the thread and/or the number of motifs.

3 dimensional needle tatted flower.

3-D Flower

Tatting definitions used to create the 3dimentional flower.

Small Motif

   R   5 – 5 rw

* Ch  4 rw

   R   4 – 4 rw (make picot large enough for 3 joins)

   Ch  3 – 3 – 3 rw

   R   4 + 4 rw

   Ch  3 – 3 – 3 rw

   R   4 + 4 rw

   Ch  3 – 3 – 3 rw

   R   4 + 4 rw

   Ch  4 rw

   R  5 – 5 rw

Repeat from “*” for the amount of small motifs you desire.  This example has 6 motifs.

Medium Motif

Starting from the single R 5 -5 from the last small motif, continue as follows :

* Ch  7 rw

   R   5 – 5 rw  (make picot large enough for 4 joins)

   Ch  3 – 3 – 3 – 3 rw

   R   5 + 5 rw

   Ch 3 – 3 – 3 – 3 rw

   R   5 + 5 rw

   Ch 3 – 3 – 3 – 3 rw

   R   5 + 5 rw

   Ch 3 – 3 – 3 – 3 rw

   R   5 + 5 rw

   Ch  7 rw

   R   5 – 5 rw

Repeat from “*” for the amount of medium motifs you desire.  This example has 8 motifs.

Large Motif

Starting from the single ring 5 – 5 from the last medium motif, continue as follows :

* Ch  10 rw

   R    6 – 6 rw (make picot large enough for 4 joins)

   Ch  3 – 3 – 3 – 3 – 3 rw

   R    6 + 6 rw

   Ch  3 – 3 – 3 – 3 – 3 rw

   R    6 + 6 rw

   Ch  3 – 3 – 3 – 3 – 3 rw

   R    6 +6  rw

   Ch  3 – 3 – 3 – 3 – 3 rw

   R    6 + 6 rw

   Ch  10

   R    5 + 5 rw

Continue from “*” for the amount of large motifs you desire.  This example has 10 motifs.

Making the flower

Cut a piece of thread and tie to picot of single R 5-5 of first small motif. Thread through all the small motif picots and gather into the flower shape.  Secure by threading through a few of the rings and tying. Continue with the medium and large motifs, gathering and securing as you go.  You may want to secure the last large motif to another to help hold the shape.  If you have any questions, please send me a note and I will try and clarify things for you.

Thank you so much for joining me today. This adorable 3D flower was so much fun to make. Have you ever tatted a 3D flower before? I’d love to see your creation if you have. Have a wonderful week, stay warm and join me again me again next week for another Flashback Friday.
