Welcome to the craft room and today’s Flashback Friday Cut Away Image post. Today’s technique is an interesting one. A few weeks ago I shared the Flashback Friday Paper Piecing Outside post where the floral image hung off the edge of the die cut. That was accomplished by stamping a second image, fussy cutting a portion of it, and then gluing it onto the die cut. With today’s technique, the stamped image stays intact and the die shape is cut away from it. A little confused? Let me show you what I mean.
Cut Away Image
This is a fun technique that I found online, however I don’t remember where I found it. If you know who I should give credit to, please let me know in the comments below!
Start out by stamping your image and finding the shape die you want to use. I chose the Classic Oval Large Nestabilities Die. Line up the die on your image so that a portion of the image is outside of the die. Make sure, for this step, the cutting bar is facing up.
Lightly trace around the inside of the die, the portion of your image you want to hang over the cut edge.
Fussy cut around the image, right up to the pencil line. Make sure you do not cut away any of the extra paper from around the very edge of your image next to the pencil mark.
Slide your die back into place as shown in the image below, with the cutting bar facing down. Line up the pencil line with the inner edge of your die.
Run the die through your machine of choice.
Erase the pencil line and add to your project. For this example I layered the die cut image with the Nestabilities Classis Scallops Large die.
And there you go! This really is a fascinating technique and adds a special touch to any card or scrapbook page. If you have any questions, or know who I can credit, place drop me a note!
