Welcome back to the craft room and today’s Flashback Friday Faux Layers post. Once again we are going to dive back into the archives of not only my own blog, but also StampTV. I think we can agree that creating cards with multiple layers is the normal process. Today we are going to take a look at yet another fun way to create a card with our only layer being the front of our card. Let me show you what I mean.
Faux Layers
Love the look of layers on your cards?? We all do, but sometimes adding too many layers can add up when you arrive at the post office. Thanks to the fabulous GinaK of StampTV, here’s a simple way to add the look of layers without the added bulk. Here’s the link to her video, Sponging a Layer, where she explains the process.
This is a fun technique that uses a scrap piece of cardstock as a mask before applying Distress Inks (any type of ink will do really). While the mask is still in place stamp your image, or not, what ever tickles your fancy at this point. Because this is a one-layer card, using a thick cardstock is a necessity so the colors will not bleed to the inside of the card. If using Copic markers like I did and as Gina did in the video, there is no better paper than GinaK’s 120lb base weight cardstock.
I haven’t had a chance to replenish my stock of cardstock since making Christmas cards, so I only had a few scraps to play with, but it gave me a chance to play around with ink and pen color combinations.
Faux Layer Samples
My first sample is a close reproduction color wise, of the card in the video. I used Peeled Paint Distress Ink and the Copic colors are Y17 Golden Yellow and R27 Cadmium Red.
The second sample is with Antique Linen Distress Ink along with R24 Prawn and R22 Light Prawn Copic markers.
The next sample is with sunny yellow and orange. Starting with Mustard Seed Distress Ink, YR68 Orange, and YR61 Yellowish Skin Pink Copic markers.
The final sample is created with Weathered Wood Distress Ink, V04 Lilac, and E15 Dark Suntan Copic markers.
I can hardly wait to use this technique on an actual card project. In the mean time, I’ll keep playing around with different color combinations. Hope you have as much fun trying this as I did!
