Welcome back to the craft room and today’s Flashback Friday For the Birds post. Of all the card making challenges I did back in the day, this was the only bird challenge I remembered participating in. Was it fate because I had just purchased a new stamp just weeks before? Perhaps! Let’s take a peek at the card I made back in August 2011.
Free For All Friday – For the Birds!
Each Friday, the talented designers at StampTV hosted a Free For All challenge. This week, our hostess Jennie wanted to see bird-themed cards. A few weeks earlier, I had purchased a new stamp at the Scrapbook and Rubberstamp Expo. Last night, I dug it out so I could join the challenge.
I forgot to write down which booth I purchased this stamp from. There was nothing on the plastic baggie except a price tag. Even so, I absolutely loved this little hummingbird.
The image was stamped on Heavy Base Weight Ivory cardstock using Tuxedo Black Memento ink. It was colored with colored pencils and baby oil. I loved how thick this cardstock was, especially since the incomplete image on the reverse side did not show through on the finished card.
You really can’t see it in the pictures I took, but the bird was layered. I stamped and colored the original image first. Then I added a second complete bird over the top. After looking at it again through sleepy eyes, I added the top wing as well to give it more dimension.
When I finished the card around 2 a.m., the top left corner looked so bare. This is where my problem with card making usually came in: what to do with all that white space. I didn’t really intend to create a birthday card. However, after staring at it for a while, I looked up and saw this Happy Birthday stamp sitting on my desk. So there ya go!
Thank you so much for joining me for today’s Flashback Friday For the Birds post. I really loved how this card turned out. I do need to comment about this hummingbird stamp, though. While I absolutely loved it, it was very difficult to work with.
It was a red rubber stamp, but it came without any backing. It was just the red rubber alone. As I walked away from the booth with this stamp and another in the same condition, I really had no idea how best to use them. Honestly, I still don’t.
While I know there is backing foam available on the market, I still have no idea where to find it. Someday I’ll track it down, or I’ll just use the stamp again as is and hope for the best! Let me know down in the comments if you have any suggestions on where I can find this backing foam, or if you use red rubber stamps without it. How does that work for you?
