Welcome back to the craft room and today’s Flashback Friday Gatefold Anniversary Card post. Today, I’m taking you all the way back to my very first card tutorial—a sweet anniversary card I made for my niece and her husband. It also happened to be my first attempt at creating a gatefold card!
At the time, I was so proud of how it turned out… until I tucked it into the envelope and realized it could’ve used just a little more width. Still, the whole project was a fun and valuable learning experience—and I truly thought it was beautiful. Let me walk you through that original tutorial and then show you the finished card!
Gatefold Cards
Gatefold cards are easy. All you do is take the final width of your card and divide that number in half to get the width of each side. So if your finished card will be 5” wide, each side will be about 2 ½” wide. Now for some reason my sides usually overlap each other a bit, so I just cut off a smidgen from each side until they meet in the middle.
Gatefold Anniversary Card
Here’s an anniversary card I just made today for Heidi and Dan. It’s a gate fold card that has been embossed with VersaMark ink and a clear embossing powder. The saying was printed on a transparency so you can see the embossing on the white card behind it.

In my defense, I had no idea I’d still be blogging 17 years later—or that anyone would actually be reading those early posts! That said, gatefold cards are still super easy to make, and the clear embossing really sends this card over the top for me.
I thought about polishing up this old tutorial, but you know what? I’m leaving it just as it is. It was my very first post, and there’s something special about seeing where it all began.
