Welcome back to the craft room and today’s Flashback Friday Prima Like Flowers. In May 2013, I decided it was time to try making my own flowers. While I adored Prima paper flowers, I couldn’t justify the cost of keeping them in my stash. So, I set out to create my own version—similar in style, if you squint just right! Join me as I take you on a little tour of my handmade paper flowers and share how you can make your own.
Prima Like Flowers
Adding flowers is a fun way to dress up any paper project, but picking them out at the store can feel overwhelming. With so many types, shapes, colors, and materials to choose from, it’s easy to get stuck in decision paralysis. Or maybe that’s just me! I get so overwhelmed that I often leave empty-handed, with no new flowers in my stash.
Making your own flowers can feel just as overwhelming, but late last year, I came across a fun tutorial for creating Prima-style flowers. (Use your imagination… lol!)
What you need:
- Cardstock
- Scallop circle spellbinder die
- Scissors
- Embossing stylist
- Mouse pad
Use your Spellbinders die to cut scalloped circles. Then, make a small cut between every two scallops, cutting toward the center but stopping before you reach it. Repeat this step all the way around the circle.
Using your embossing stylus, draw a line down the center of each double petal. Then, flip the flower over and use the larger end of the stylus to emboss each petal. Work in circular motions from the tip of the petal down to the base.
Now, flip the flower back over and use a larger stylus—or, in my case, a pen with a rounded end—to emboss the center. This step helps shape the petals, as you’ll see in the following picture.
To finish your flowers, glue one or two layers together using your favorite adhesive, then add a center. In the examples above, I used buttons colored with Copic markers and even tried making my own pearl center. I wasn’t entirely thrilled with the results, but hey—the whole thing was an experiment!
