Welcome back to the craft room and today’s Flashback Friday Sketch Challenge Card post. Are you ever stuck for a new and exciting card design? I know I am from time to time. That’s where card sketches come in handy. Even better when that sketch is attached to a card challenge! Not only are you able to come up with your own ideas, but you can see how everyone else interpreted the sketch as well. Let me share the sketch challenge from May 2010 and the card I made.

Sketch Challenge Card

It’s time for another sketch challenge over at splitcoaststampers!

Here is the sketch:

Here is my take on the splitcoaststampers sketch challenge this week. I started out with a piece of scrap paper that began its life as a manila file folder. Masking off an area, I sponged the bottom portion with Tea Dye Distress ink. The top portion was sponged with Vintage Photo Distress Ink and a little Fired Brick to add a touch of red. The outer edge was run against the Vintage Photo ink pad to give it a bit more definition.

Photo of my interpretation of the sketch for today's Flashback Friday Sketch Challenge Card post with Distress Inks and a stamp from Inkadinkado.

The horse image is from the Inkadinkado Horses set and is stamped with black Memento ink. It was cut out using Nestabilities Large Deckled Rectangle. To add color to the panel, the outer edges are sponged with Vintage Photo Distress Ink. I wanted the edges to be really dark so I ran the edge of the panel around the ink pad to give it a darker look. However, it still wasnโ€™t dark enough. Instead, I ran it over the Black Soot Distress Ink pad as well to add even more depth. To finish it off, I added a brown grosgrain ribbon from Offray and mounted it on a dark green card base. In case you are unsure what grosgrain ribbon is, you can check out this blog post that I found, What is Grosgrain Ribbon for a full explanation.

It appears that the card is a little orange here, probably because I started with a manila folder. It looks more true to color in real life.

Thank you for joining me for today’s Flashback Friday Sketch Challenge Card post. This ended up being the perfect birthday card for a friend of ours. He was a true cowboy and horse lover. Looking back, I should have stamped the horse in a dark brown ink. However, what I do really love is the almost burned edge look of that panel. So fitting for a western style card! Thank you again for dropping by. Have a fantastic weekend and I will see you back in the craft room again soon!
