Welcome back to the craft room and today’s Flashback Friday Sympathy Card post. Unfortunately, in July of 2011 we needed 2 sympathy cards. This type of card is very difficult to make, but I think having a clean and simple design is always best. The card shown below fits that idea perfectly. Since writing the original post, the company I purchased both stamps from, B&J’s Art Stamps, is no longer in business. With that in mind, let me show you how I created today’s card.
Sympathy Card
Here is one of two identical cards I created this past week, and sadly there were recipients in mind when they were made. The stamps are both new, purchased about 3 weeks ago at the Rubber Stamp and Scrapbook Expo in Loveland, Colorado, from B & J’s Art Stamps. They are in Las Cruces, New Mexico but have a web site (You can find them here – B & J’s Art Stamps) with all of their amazing stamps.
The cardstock is the heavy base weight Ivory cardstock from Gina K. Designs. To add a little bit of interest to the card I used my Large Oval Nestabilities die to emboss (but not cut) the oval around the rose stamp. The rose was then filled in with yellow and green colored pencils before using baby oil and a blending stump to smooth out the color. I did a little bit of shading with a darker yellow on the petals and green on the leaves, which you can see a bit better in the close-up.

Thank you for joining me for today’s Flashback Friday Sympathy Card post. While the subject of the card is heartbreaking, the design is lovely. The texture created with the embossed edge of the cutting die adds a nice frame around the rose stem. For some reason I didn’t go into detail on that technique. To emboss but not cut the die shape, I used the Tan Embossing mat from Spellbinders. The only die cutting machine I had at the time was the Cuttlebug machine. The cutting plate sandwich to do this technique is as follows: Thick base plate, “B” plate, tan embossing mat, cardstock, die with the cutting blade facing down, and a second “B” Plate. After running this through the machine, you have a beautifully embossed shape.
