Welcome back to the craft room and today’s Flashback Friday Very First Videos post. I have always been painfully shy and introverted, and that has had a major impact on my life over the years. Even back in 1998, when I first started blogging and sharing my tatting patterns online, putting myself out there felt incredibly difficult. Over time, however, I found my rhythm. Little by little, sharing my “voice” through blogging became easier, and I grew more comfortable connecting in that way.
With that in mind, in 2017 I decided it was finally time to be brave enough to try YouTube. I recorded two videos showing how I created a daisy flower for a card that had already been featured on my blog. That original card was shared in my Flashback Friday Scrapbook Expo Card Swap post, where you can see the full card, a close-up of the daisy, the complete set I created for the swap, and the lovely cards I received in return. You would think that being alone in the house, with the craft room door shut tight, would have made it easier. Instead, as soon as the camera started rolling, I opened my mouth and… nothing came out. Absolutely nothing.
I still have no idea why. After sitting there for a while, though, I made a decision. Rather than give up, I simply continued the process without speaking and let the crafting do the talking.
Even now, after almost two years of creating videos consistently, there are moments when I pause and wonder how to clearly get my meaning across. The difference is that it feels so much easier now. Growth has a funny way of sneaking up on you.
With all that being said, let me share with you my very first YouTube videos!
Coloring and Shaping Technique Videos
Hey there everyone!! Today I thought I would try something a little different; making some technique videos! I try to be as descriptive as possible in my blog posts, and take lots of corresponding pictures, but sometimes a video might be a little better. So, with the help of my husband, we created a camera stand and I offer up the following two videos for your enjoyment!
The first video is how I added color and depth to the daisy using my Copic markers and the Flicking technique.
And in the next video, I show how I added shape to the flowers using my McGill Flower shaping tool kit.
Being a little bashful, these first two videos only have “background” noise, and I apologize for that! As I get more comfortable with the idea of creating them, my voice will come out!
Thank you so much for joining me for today’s Flashback Friday Very First Videos post. My voice eventually did come out! Although it took seven years, I’m still incredibly proud of myself for breaking through that barrier.
Even now, there are moments when I sit at my work table with the camera on and briefly wonder what I’m going to say. The difference, however, is that it feels so much easier today. Over time, I’ve gained confidence not only in my crafting abilities, but more importantly, in myself.
Looking back reminds me that growth doesn’t always happen overnight. Sometimes it takes years. Sometimes it takes courage we didn’t even realize we had at the time.
