Welcome back to the craft room and today’s Folio Flip Album Tutorial. Last Monday I shared my original Folio Flip Album Show-n-Tell post. Today I’d like to share the tutorial with you for putting this together. Let’s get right to it.
Folio Base
I started this project with a piece of 12” x 12” Recollections black cardstock. I made the following cuts as shown in the photograph below.
Starting with the 8” x 12” piece, along the 12” side score at 5 ¾” & 6 ¼”.
Moving to the 8” x 4” along the 4” side, score 3” and 3 ½”.
Next to adhere the front flap to the folio base. Apply double sided adhesive or wet glue to the inside fold of the 4″ x 8″ piece as shown below. I used ¼” & 1/8” scor tape to secure the piece.
And apply it to the back of the back cover of our folio base.
Now we are going to make the waterfall flaps and the pocket. This will take two additional sheets of 12” x 12”. To create the waterfall flaps cut 8 pieces of black cardstock at 5” x 4 ½”. On the 4 ½” side we want to score at 4”.
The pocket piece is cut at 6 ½” x 3 ½”. The score lines will be made on three sides at ½”. To remove some of the bulk at the corners, remove the small square as shown below. I also made angular cuts along the top to remove some of the bulk from the pocket.
Decorating the Folio Flip Album
It’s that time to start decorating our Folio Flip Album. I chose to keep it simple, but you can add so much more to your albums. The pattern paper I chose for this album is from the paper pad Rosewood by Colorbok.
For the fold over flap we need 2 pieces measuring 7 ¾” x 2 ¾”.
The folio base will need a total of 4 pieces measuring 7 ¾” x 5 ½”.
If you want to leave the spines of the folio plain, that would be fine. I chose to add pattern paper that measure approximately 7 ¾” x ¼”. You will need four pieces to cover the inside and outside spines.
The waterfall mats are 4 ¾” x 3 ¾”. I only covered the front of my waterfall, so I only needed 8 pieces. If you want to cover the front and back like my first album, you will need 16 total pieces.
Finally for the pocket you will need a piece of pattern paper that measures 5 ¼” x 2 ¾”.
Before we begin to apply the pattern paper mats to the folio, there are two decisions we need to keep in mind; are we going to add a closure such as a magnet and where? I have ZERO experience with magnets and the ones I bought are just too darn thick. As you can see they are almost 1/8” thick. Because they are this thick, I decided to not use two of them to close the album. Instead, I chose to use thin washers on the other side.
I placed the magnet to the inside of the front flap. The washer is on the front of the front cover. Use plenty of adhesive to hold these items in place.
I am not thrilled with how the pattern paper looks with the magnet underneath it. It could be the paper is too thin, the magnet is too thick, or a bad combination of the two. If anyone has a link to a thinner magnet, please share it in the comments below!
The Waterfall
Once you have the magnets attached to the folio, begin adding the rest of the pattern paper. After the center piece of pattern paper is in place, you can start applying the waterfall. I lined the first page up with the top edge of the pattern paper with about ¼” on either side.
It is important to have this first waterfall flap as straight as possible. The rest of the waterfall will depend on it. You might be able to see in the finished folio that not all of my flaps are lined up straight. As a friend of mine once said, it’s not homemade if there isn’t one visible mistake.
For the first album I used three single photo mats. They all measured 5” x 3 ¾” with the pattern paper mats that measure 4 ¾” x 3 ½”. For this album I changed things up a bit. There are two larger mats that measure 5″x7″ and 4.25″ x 6 5/8″. I also added a little booklet that measure 4” x 5 3/8”. As with the waterfall, I left the back side of the mats blank.

I was going to come here and comment about basic grey magnets as well lol. They are amazingly strong and thin and they have worked great on any project I’ve made that requires a magnet closure.
Thank you for the comment Kim. I have always heard great things about the Basic Gray magnets and will for sure check them out. I did pick up some thin magnets from a company called Tall Mouse a few years ago. While they are super thin, the strength seems a little weak after adding a layer of heavy pattern paper. In the corresponding video to my Tri-fold Folio Album Flip Through post, I talk about how I needed to use three of those small magnets to keep the cover closed. From all the good things I’ve heard about the Basic Gray magnets it seems only 2 would be needed for a project like that.
Where can you get the magnets
Hi Dean, The only place I have been able to find BasicGrey magnets is on Amazon. I did however find some great ones over on the Tall Mouse Cre8tiveartz website. I picked some up a few years ago and they work really well.

Maymay made it on YouTube created something like this. She put her magenta on top of the paper and just added a paper embellishment on top of the magnet to hide it. She also shares slim magnets in her videos as well. This is beautiful either way. I’m going to try it 🫶🏻

I get my magnets from total element. Neodymium 3/8 x 1/32. They are around $15 for 50 of them. Way cheaper and super strong and flat.

Hi, I realize this is an old post, but I love the folio!
I see the magnets you used are labeled as neo buttons. Neodymium magnets tend to be a little thicker than scrapbooking magnets.
You may want to look at Scrapbook.com or Simo Says Stamp for the Basic Grey scrapbooking magnets – they are strong and extremely thin.
I have also used magnet tape – it’s a little on the bulk side, but not as bad as the neodymium ones.
Hi Judith, thank you! When I made this folio back in the day I looked everywhere for the Basic Gray magnets. I did finally find some of the super thin ones from the company Tall Mouse a hand full of years after making this folio. How strong is the magnetic tape? Does it hold with more than two layers of paper between them?
