Hello my friends and welcome back to the craft room and today’s Show ‘n Tell Birthday Gift and Card post. My good friend and co-worker celebrated her 30th birthday this past week. I really wanted to make her something extra special. She is a self proclaimed Drama Queen, so of course that was the central idea to run with. Let me show you what I made her!
Birthday Gift
Because she is a Drama Queen, I wanted to make her a t-shirt with Heat Transfer Vinyl. I created the design in Cricut Design space using a crown .svg file I found on the Design Bundles web site. The font is Vintage Party from Creative Fabrica. I found a really pretty heather blue Gildan t-shirt for her at Michaels. To add to the drama I absolutely had to use Cricut gold and silver glitter heat transfer vinyl.

The Box
Of course I had to create a box to package the gift in. Back in December I shared a blog post about creating the perfect sized box for any gift. Check out that post here: Making a Custom Size Box. After folding the shirt so the image would be front and center I decided an 8” x 8” box would perfect. Following the directions from the December post you need to determine how tall and wide you want the desired box. In my case I needed the box to be 1.5” tall and 8” square. To find the cut size for the bottom of the box add the following together: 1.5” + 8” + 1.5” = 11”.
The dimensions for the box top are found the same way. You will need to decide it you want the top to be the same height or shorter. I wanted it top to be a little bit shorter so I used the following: 1.25” + 8” + 1.25” = 10.5”
The most important thing to remember is before taking the box bottom to the score board, remove 1/16” from two consecutive sides of the card. This will ensure the box top will fit perfectly over the bottom. Now score the bottom card at 1.5” on all four sides and the box top at 1.25” on all four sides. Cut and glue the tabs together and there you go! I added a beautiful piece of silver foiled pattern paper from the DCWV Silver Foil paper pack to decorate the top of the box.

The Card
Because the gift was on the funny side, I wanted the card a bit more elegant to match the box. It is a simple A2 sized card, 4.25” x 5.5”. I began with a piece of 110lb black Recollections card stock. I used a piece of the same silver foiled pattern paper from the DCWV Silver Leaf paper pack. The Happy Birthday sentiment was made with the Spellbinders Glimmer Hot Foil Be Bold Sentiments set with gold foil. I die cut three pieces of scrap card stock to create some height and glued it to the card front.

To add a bit more to the envelope, I added a strip of the pattern paper. The box was then tied with a length of white Offray ribbon and it was complete.

The gift and card were a huge success! She absolutely loved it, and I had fun making it for her. I really love the difference between the elegance of the card and box versus the fun of the gift.
Thank you so much for joining me to today’s Show ‘n Tell Birthday Gift and Card post. I’m curious, have you ever mixed elegance with funny when it comes to cards and gifts? Or are you more traditional, elegance with elegance and funny with funny? Let me know if the comments below. Until then, I hope you all have a wonderful week ahead and I will see you in the craft room again soon!
