Welcome back to the craft room and today’s Flashback Friday Cardstock and Coffee Filter Flowers post. Let’s take a stroll down memory lane and revisit a few more fabulous DIY flowers I made back in 2013. First up, we have a set of flowers crafted using the Tim Holtz Tattered Florals die and classic cardstock. Next, we have something a little more unexpected—flowers made from coffee filters! I know, it might sound a bit crazy at first but stick with me. You’ll be amazed at how delicate, and versatile these coffee filter flowers can be. Finally I made one adorable little carnation like flower with colored tissue paper.
Cardstock and Coffee Filter Flowers
Late last year, I challenged myself to start making my own flowers instead of purchasing pre-made ones. Here are a few more of my handmade attempts from earlier this year, each exploring different styles and techniques.
Cardstock Flowers
I began with the only dedicated flower die I own—the Tim Holtz Tattered Florals die. Using just the three similarly shaped petals, I experimented with a few different ways to create flowers, starting with a classic rose shape. All of these were made using scrap paper I had scattered around my craft table, so unfortunately, I’m not exactly sure what kind of paper it was.
Flower #1: I followed Tim’s directions to create a rose. The center turned out okay, and the bottom petals look decent—but to me, the whole thing feels like it’s missing something. To add a bit of color, I lightly dabbed the finished flower with a sponge dauber using Fired Brick Distress Ink. It turned out pretty, just not quite perfect in my eyes.
Flower #2: For this one, I used a round-bottomed pen to add dimension to each petal. I placed the die-cut shapes on my mouse pad and used the bottom of the pen in a circular motion to shape them. To assemble the flower, I flipped every other layer upside down for more variety and topped it off with a Copic-colored button in the center.
Flower #3: This one is made using just the two smallest petal shapes, shaped with the same pen technique I mentioned earlier. It’s simple, but still quite pretty!
Coffee Filter Flowers
Now for a couple of flowers that took a little more time to make and swapped out cardstock for coffee filters.
Flowers #1 & #2 were made with the coffee filters! I found the instructions for these on Pinterest. However, after spending two days trying to track down the link, I sadly couldn’t find it again. If memory serves me right, the process goes something like this. You cut an odd number of petals—in my case, I used the large flower from the Tattered Florals die. After coloring each petal with Distress Inks and drying them with a heat gun, you fold each piece in half. Starting with a small circle of cardstock, you glue the first folded petal to half of the circle. Turn the base a quarter turn and glue down the next folded petal. Continue turning and gluing until the flower has the fullness you want. Finally, add a center and fluff the petals to complete the look.
To finish Flower #1, I added a few medium-sized flowers and topped it off with a pearl center that I made using some extra small pearl beads. For Flower #2, I added a small scrunched cardstock flower for a bit of extra texture. I just wanted something to bring it all together, so I grabbed this small flower to complete the look. Below is a closer picture of Flower #1 with the pearl center.
Flower #3 was created using colored tissue paper. I cut about 8 layers of tissue paper with a scalloped Spellbinders die. Once the layers were stacked, I used a small brad to attach them together. Then, starting with the top layer, I gently scrunched each layer up. After all the layers were scrunched, I played around with the flower to shape it until I got the look I wanted.
