Welcome back to the craft room and today’s Flashback Friday Stained Glass Vellum post. I really enjoy adding vellum to my card projects. It always gives a soft, delicate look to every card. Of course, that brings up two common challenges—how to decorate vellum and how to attach it securely without the adhesive showing. In today’s Flashback Friday post, I tackle both of those questions—and I really love how the final card turned out!
Vellum Card
After a three-month crafting block, I finally made something new, and it felt so good to be creating again. This sweet little card features a piece of vellum that I heat embossed with white embossing powder—a technique I never get tired of.
To add color, I used the stained glass method: coloring on the reverse side of the vellum with Copic markers. I reached for RV13, RV14, and Y17 to give the floral image a soft but vibrant glow. The stamp I used is one that’s been in my collection for years—don’t you love when an old favorite gets a new life?
One of the tricky parts about using vellum is finding a way to adhere it without the adhesive showing through. Because it’s translucent, most tapes and glues become visible once it’s layered onto your project. I’ve heard there’s a vellum tape that works well, but I haven’t tried it myself. Personally, I love using brads to secure the corners. They not only hold everything in place but also add a decorative touch that complements the delicate feel of vellum.
Bonus Vellum Tips
While I added more information to this post than I did on others, there are still a few things to interject. When heat embossing vellum, it’s important to remember that heat will warp the surface. There are thicker vellums on the market now that don’t warp as quickly, but care still needs to be taken.
I also learned that when coloring vellum with Copic markers, going over the same section more than once can actually remove the first layer of color while adding the new one. A little bit of practice on a scrap piece before starting your project can really help avoid frustration.
