Welcome back to the craft room and today’s Throwdown Color Challenge #807 Card post. Occasionally, I remember to check out the official Color Throwdown web site just to see what color combination they are working with. This week’s colors are so pretty I just had to give it a try! The color combination of light blue, cream and kraft seemed like a great way to spark my creativity. Let me show you the card I created!
Color Throwdown Challenge
For those of you who are unfamiliar with the challenge let me give you a quick rundown. Every Wednesday on the challenge website, a new color combination is given. Anyone who wishes to participate has until the following Monday evening to submit a card. I have played along once in the past and had a super fun time! Birthday Challenge Card
The Flowers
For my card, I wanted to work with some of my older Heartfelt Creations sets. After thumbing through the stack, I decided to use the Oakberry Lane Blossoms set. While this is a stamp and die set, I only used the dies for this project. This set features small delicate flowers and two leaves. It is perfect for a small bouquet on an A2 size card.
I cut several flowers from 65lb white Recollections card and got to work coloring them. Using my Copic Markers, I colored the layers with B12, Ice Blue, and B14, Light Blue. I added the lighter color, B12, as a base color to all the layers. This is where I stopped with the smallest flowers. For the medium and large layers, I added B14 in a flicking motion to create a lot of texture on the petals.
To shape the petals, I used the 6mm and 2mm stylist from my McGill Flower Shaping kit and the included foam mat. On the back side of the large and medium size layers, I used the large 6mm end to gently shape the petals. Working the stylist in circular motions added both texture and dimension. Turning the layer over, I began to gently go around the base of the petals, again in a circular motion, to press the center down. For the small layer, I switched to the 2mm end of the stylist and just went around the very edge of each petal. Again, turning the layer over, and pressing the center down.
The images above show just how much dimension can be accomplished with this method. For my project today, I am using three different layer combinations. The large flower shown above is one of each layer, which makes a beautiful full blossom. The medium flower is the made with the medium and small layers. Finally, my bud is just the smallest layer. They are glued together at the center with Art Glitter Glue. This is a great adhesive to use when making flowers as it dries rather quickly, allowing you to move on to the next layer.
The Sentiment
From the beginning I knew this was a birthday card, however, I didn’t know what sentiment to use. The longer I thought about it, the more I realized I was not fooling anyone, and the Kaiser Craft Occasions stamp set would be used again! The simple font and smaller size of this stamp is perfect for a busy background. Rather than use the typical black ink though, I dug around and found my Ranger Archival Mini ink sets. The color Forget-Me-Not matched perfectly to Copic colors used on the flowers!
There was one little drawback to this plan of mine. The Birthday sentiment was small and dainty, and the flowers ended up taking a lot of real estate, but there was still a big hole. So, after digging through my stamp sets again, I found a little sentiment from the Sweet Folk Hummingbird set by The Ton Stamps, “Have a sweet day”. Adding this put the final touch on the card.
I will admit though, adding a bouquet of flowers to the front of a card is harder than it looks. At least that is the case for me. I like the way the card turned out, but I can’t help but think it could still be better. So, this is my call for help! The Finished Color Challenge Card
I absolutely love the finished card. All the cardstock used is Recollections, with a combination of 110lb and 65lb weights. The cream color card base and front are from the 110lb Coffee and Cream paper pack. The flowers were cut from 65lb white, and the card mat as well as the leaves were cut from 65lb Kraft card.
